Working Mens Clubs Support for "Axe the Beer Tax" Campaign

The Working Men's Club and Institute Union (WMCIU) have today announced their support for the "Axe the Beer Tax" campaign to scrap Government plans to impose the alcohol duty escalator in next month's Budget.

With rising unemployment and the rate of pubs and clubs closures increasing, the WMCIU are urging MPs in Parliament to sign Early Day Motion 10 to Save the Great British Pub.  Already more than 195 MPs from all parties have signed up in support.

Kevin Smyth, General Secretary of WMCIU said "The Working Men's Clubs Institute Union is delighted to support the "Axe the Beer Tax" campaign. For over a century, our clubs have formed a vital hub for many local communities."

"Yet, like pubs, they are facing serious challenges and with the recession hitting hard the last thing our members needed was to be singled out for more tax rises. The Government must listen to the public and not impose further taxes on us again."
